About this edition
The complete Institutes — preface and all twelve books. Books I–V and VII–XII follow Edgar C. S. Gibson’s 1894 NPNF English, prepared from the CCEL text and proofed against page images.
Book VI (On the Spirit of Fornication) is newly translated for this edition from Petschenig’s Latin (CSEL 17). Gibson left that book untranslated; we restore it rather than repeat the gap.
