About this edition

The complete Institutes — preface and all twelve books. Books I–V and VII–XII follow Edgar C. S. Gibson’s 1894 NPNF English, prepared from the CCEL text and proofed against page images.

Book VI (On the Spirit of Fornication) is newly translated for this edition from Petschenig’s Latin (CSEL 17). Gibson left that book untranslated; this edition supplies it. The Book VI English was prepared with large language models under Resurrection Publishing’s editorial method; it is not a signed translation by a human Latinist. A documented multi-agent fidelity audit of this English is open for human review.

Elsewhere, free PDFs give you the words. This edition is prepared for deep reading — so you can stay with the argument — and you keep the book.
